Year-End Network Monitoring Assessment – What are Your Plans for the Future
Posted by: Chris Burt
Thu, 2012-12-06 15:47

Year-End Network Monitoring AssessmentAs we approach the New Year, many organizations’ data centers and network configurations are in lockdown mode. Whether this is due to assuming a defensive posture against the onslaught of holiday ecommerce traffic, or an accommodation to vacationing staff, the situation provides network managers an opportunity to perform a year-end network monitoring assessment.

Establish Future Goals, Identify Current Weaknesses and Make Sure Core Tasks and Goals Are Achieved

Q. How many locations will you need to monitor in the New Year?

If there are new...

The Key to Visibility in SDN
John Ross's picture

The lack of programmability in existing networking hardware is a problem—especially to private cloud and virtual data center customers. Such users need better programmability in the network in order to deliver applications and services. Software Defined Networks (SDNs) answer this need, and most companies such as Cisco, HP and Juniper are delivering on an SDN strategy, as is VMware.

The Importance of Creating an SDN Strategy

An SDN strategy acknowledges that the role and management of the physical network is changing. We must adopt new methodologies and approaches to create visibility and to manage, not only across a single vendor’s SDN implementation, but more than likely across...

Virtual Zero delay (DNM-101) Operational Notes

Director and Director Pro Network Module-101 (DNM-101) enables tapping of copper links with the assurance of no network downtime during power up and power down transitions. Net Optics' unique Virtual Zero Delay (VZD) technology minimizes the impact to network traffic by switching in and out of passive mode so quickly that the network link is never dropped. This eliminates the need for a lengthy renegotiation sequence and several seconds of network downtime.

VZD supports 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, and 1 Gbps speeds. However, VZD behaves differently for the 1 Gbps link speed setting.

At the 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps speeds, VZD behaves like a traditional tap; that is, VZD does not have any effects on the wire, tapping traffic and sending it to the specified monitor ports. In the 10...

xStream family 4.1 will include a feature enhancement, which is important for internal compliance and audit: Message of the day banner (MOTD). This banner can include organization-specific warnings and messages that appear to any one that is accessing the system after the login credentials were provided successively. Administrators can configure MOTD from CLI or WebUI so that when users access the device they will receive a notification. One can define the message (supporting tabs, new lines and special characters) and decide to turn on/off the message. WebUI configuration is available from system -> settings menu CLI configuration commands: xBalancer [admin@NETOPTICS] # conf Entering configuration mode terminal xBalancer [admin@NETOPTICS](config)# system motd ? Possible completions...

Question of the Month: What’s the Difference Between OpenFlow and NetFlow?
Sharon Besser's picture

Wed, 2012-11-14 06:56

Recently, I was asked more than once what the difference between NetFlow and OpenFlow is.

At the first time, I smiled and explained that the difference between the two is similar to difference between Jaguar (the car) and Panther (the UAV). Both have a similar name and share some common attributes, but they are actually different type of objects.

Since this question is being asked more frequently, I decided to...

In the following few days we will be releasing the next version of Director xStream product family (Director xStream, iLinkAgg xStream and xBalancer). One of the more important capabilities in this release, which is currently in beta, is High Availability and device redundancy, which is available for selected xBalancer customers for more than a year and now will be available for all 3 products customers as part of the software update.

High AvailabilityThe High Availability and redundancy feature (I’ll name it HA from this point on) applies to all three xFamily models – Director xStream, iLinkAgg xStream...

The Phantom Menace strikes again…and our Phantom hits back

The breaches, hacks and downtime that made headlines this year shine a blinding light on the value of total network visibility. From undetected network failures to compromises and attacks, we’ve seen how blind spots within high profile networks led to loss of service, revenue and security. An astounding 95% of compromises go undetected by organizations until an outside source (like the FBI or screaming customers) alerts them. And when it comes to securing virtual, as opposed to physical, networks companies are even less prepared.

Virtualized and consolidated environments call for particularly high levels of network integrity because in virtual landscapes, applications and administrative functions share common resources. The consequences of a failed, hacked or mismanaged...
